Its a worthy challenge rewarded with a granite dome-top 360° panorama of Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point. The two right turns to the dome are well marked so its just the 1,000 ft climb over a mile thats the challenge. Short Hike: Starting at the Taft Point/ Sentinel Dome trailhead parking area, this out-and-back hike comes in just over two miles in length.įamily Friendly: Depending on the age and fitness of the kids, this could be a great option to explore one of the iconic granite features in the park, without having to go more than a few miles round trip. From the end of Roosevelt Point Trail to the top of Sentinel Dome represents the bulk of elevation gain on this hike. This trail is a good introduction to 'Peak Bagging', the trail. At one time, it was a living tree, but this tree fell victim to vandalism in 1984 is no longer living. The trail actually climbs Sentinel Dome from the East which is a very easy trail. The tree had been dead since a severe drought in 1977 and fell in August of 2003 after a series of storms. While approaching Sentinel Dome you often question if this trail is really going to the top. Ansel Adams took an iconic photo of the tree in 1940 that brought widespread interest to this area. Park rangers say that the tree was up to 400 years old and stood at around 12' tall. There is also a famous tree, that has now fallen, that Ansel Adams photographed many years ago. The first stop along this route is Sentinel Dome, which is a short trek to the top of a granite dome with amazing views of the valley and the terrain to the west. Once at the top, look for the fallen Jeffrey pine that was one of the most photographed trees in the world with the first photograph dating back to 1867 by Carleton Watkins. This trail begins from Glacier Point and takes you to two incredible viewpoints along the south rim of Yosemite Valley. From the Taft Point Trailhead on Glacier Point Road, follow signs for the Sentinel Dome Trail, heading right. This is a great trail to do later in the day, as Sentinel Dome is a great place to watch the sunset. There are restrooms and small visitor center here. Glacier Point is a great place to refill your water. The top of the dome, at 8,122 feet, is the second highest point along the rim of Yosemite Valley. The hike to Sentinel Dome is 2.2-miles roundtrip. Sentinel Dome has beautiful panoramic views and Glacier Point features an incredible view of Half Dome and the surrounding mountains. The Sentinel Dome hike provides a more accessible route to a striking granite feature that is similar to Half Dome but well within a half-day's journey. Providing one of the best 360-degree views in the park, some argue that this is an even better lookout than Glacier Point.
